NEW YORK:

Hundreds of thousands of revelers rang in 2009 across the world, signaling the end of a
historic and troubled year that saw the election of the first black US president and the worst
economic crisis in decades.
As the clock struck midnight, a ton of confetti rained down New York's Times Square, while
partygoers hugged and kissed. The wind chill didn't deter the thousands of people who were cloaked in fur hats and sleeping bags.

"We're worried about the economy but hoping for the best," said Lisa Mills, who was visiting Times Square from Danville, Ohio, on Wednesday night.
But more than 12 hours before that, Bangkok ringed in the New Year with a tragic fire that killed at least 59 revelers in a popular nightclub and left about 200 with burns and injuries.
Hours later, Pope Benedict XVI called for "sobriety and solidarity" in 2009. During the year-end vespers service in the splendor of St Peter's Basilica on Wednesday evening, the pope said these times are"marked by uncertainty and worry for the future". But he urged people not to be afraid, and instead to help each other.
The Middle East, however, did not see any let up in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip. Huge explosions shook Gaza City as Israeli planes targeted three government buildings.
Israeli ground forces were putting the final touches on preparations for a possible ground invasion.
More than 400 Palestinians have been killed and over 1,600 wounded since Israel began bombarding Hamas sites on Saturday,
In South America, six luxury cruise liners set sail from Rio de Janeiro's famous Copacabana Beach as about 2 million Brazilian revelers tried to forget their troubles for at least one night amid the fireworks.
Roberto Felipe, a 22-year-old construction worker, stood shirtless with a beer bottle in hand as he watched the spectacle. "I hope tonight we begin the end of war and crisis," he said. "I hope 2009, which is bringing US President (Barack) Obama to the scene, will help us all have a better life."
Back in the US, some New Year's Eve revelers fell victim to hard times as many others held somewhat subdued parties. Fewer people seemed interested in giving 2008 an expensive send-off because of the US economic crisis.
Public celebrations were canceled in communities from Louisville in Kentucky to Reno in Nevada, and promoters in Miami Beach in Florida reported slower ticket sales than expected for celebrity-studded parties that they say would have sold out in past years.
Others around the world paused for a deep breath and a sip of perhaps something cheaper than
champagne. "We're not going to celebrate in a big way. We're being careful," said architect Moussa Siham, 24, as shoppers in the affluent area west of Paris scaled back purchases for the traditional New Year's Eve feast.
Sydney was the first major city to ring in 2009, showering its shimmering harbor with a kaleidoscope of light that drew cheers from more than 1 million people.
In Ireland, thousands of Dubliners and tourists gathered outside the capital's oldest medieval
cathedral, Christ Church, to hear the traditional New Year's Eve bell-ringing.
"It is a wondrously beautiful note on which to end what, for many people, has been an awfully out-of-tune 2008," said Gary Maguire, a volunteer pulling the ropes.
In Asia, the Malaysian government chose not to sponsor any celebration at all because of the shaky economy.
But in Hong Kong, thousands flocked to Victoria Harbor for a midnight fireworks display. Those with investments linked to collapsed investment bank Lehman Brothers, the biggest corporate bankruptcy case in US history, found little joy, though.
"I don't think there's any reason for me to celebrate after knowing that my investment is worth
nothing now," said electrical repairman Chan Hon-ming, who had purchased a $30,000 Lehman-backed investment.
In Iceland, people vent more anger over the country's collapsed economy. Demonstrators forced an annual New Year's Eve broadcast featuring the prime minister off the air and stormed the hotel where it was being filmed.
In India, many people were happy to see the end of 2008 after a series of terrorist attacks in several cities, which culminated in the three-day siege in Mumbai that killed 164 people.
"The year 2008 can best be described as a year of crime, terrorism, bloodshed and accidents," said
Rishi Srivastava, 51, an office worker in the northern Indian city of Lucknow. "I sincerely hope 2009
will be a year of peace and progress."
